The Galapagos Islands are a destination to be visited at any time of the year. Each of the months has its own highlights. Certainly, knowing when to plan your trip and the month to visit will surely make your experience memorable.

No matter what month you decide to travel you will enjoy all the natural beauty and wildlife. However, in this post we will focus on visiting Galapagos in February. Here you will be able to cram all the necessary information about weather, wildlife, and activities you can do during this month.

GALAPAGOS WEATHER IN FEBRUARY

February is in the wet season in the Galapagos Islands and is considered one of the rainiest months. However, the rains are usually sporadic, and it may rain only at certain times of the day, alternating with clear, blue and sunny skies.

As it is a period of high humidity, you may experience a more refreshing breeze. If you are going on a cruise we recommend you bring a light jacket.

At this time of year sea temperatures are around 77°F, which is cool by tropical standards. In other words, the water is still relatively warm and refreshing for a dip and for water activities such as kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving.

Visiting the Galapagos Islands in February, like January, is a good month to observe active wildlife. For example, on Floreana Island, specifically at Punta Cormoran, greater flamingos begin to nest. This incubation process lasts about 30 days.

Other species nesting during February are the marine iguanas and turtles on Santa Cruz Island. It is important to note during this period iguanas become more territorial and males can be aggressive. It is also the Galapagos sea lions mating season.

On the other hand, the Nazca booby or well known as masked booby on Española Island are finishing their nesting season, so you will be lucky to see their newly hatched chicks.

If you wish to observe the famous Galapagos penguins, during the month of February they are usually sighted to the west of the archipelago. The islands of Isabela and Fernandina are the best spots to see and take pictures of them.

Additionally, as February is a humid month, the rains and the sun transform the highlands of the island into an exuberant and green paradise. Thus, giant tortoises, iguanas, Darwin’s finches and other land birds find food in abundance.

TOURIST DEMAND IN FEBRUARY

February is not the high season in the Galapagos Islands, so the demand is generally less and also the prices are usually lower. So February can be an excellent option to visit Galapagos by cruise or get a land tour at a better price.

However, keep in mind that during this month the Carnival and Valentine’s Day festivities are celebrated. During these dates there can be a higher number of demands. So if you want to visit the Galapagos Islands in February, the beginning of the month is the best time.
